Lincoln County High School students enjoyed a fresh, locally grown addition to their lunch trays today as the cafeteria cooks proudly served the first batch of salad mix harvested by the school’s Agriculture program on today’s fresh garden bar.
This exciting milestone is part of a Farm to School initiative made possible through a grant awarded last spring in partnership with the West Virginia Department of Education Office of Child Nutrition. The grant is helping to provide resources to upgrade the school’s high tunnel, which will expand growing opportunities and allow for a more sustainable supply of fresh produce throughout the school year. This initiative supports LCHS CTE with hands-on agricultural learning for students while also supplying fresh, healthy produce for the cafeteria.
As the program grows, students, and staff can look forward to seeing more “homegrown at LCHS” items on the menu, connecting agriculture education with nutrition and wellness for our students.
